Renaults Fisichella was the fastest of all in todays qualification and took pole position, while the teams star driver, Alonso was surprisingly slow and ended up on 7th place. But that wasn't the talk of the day.
Young driver Nico Rosberg who surprised everyone by finishing on 6th position and making the fastest lap times in lastweek race at Bahrain, the first F1 race in his life(!), managed to get a 3rd place in todays qualification.
"I’m really really pleased at how it went. I have to thank the team also because I had a great car which gave me the possibility to go so far up to third. I’m really really pleased and I’m looking forward to tomorrow now." said Rosberg who before this weekend had never raced in Malaysia.
Honda's Jenson Button finished on seccond place and Williams Mark Webber finished on 4th. But the fact that these drivers took the top positions could very well be because Alonso and Räikkönen are running with a higher fuel load thus making them slower. Räikkönen and Alonso finished on a 6th and 7th place, but expect them to be in the top fairly quick tomorrow.
A problem that seems to be affecting all the teams in Malaysia is the heat, which have so far burnt out both Ferrarisa motors forcing them to replace them, and in doing so gets a penalty, meaning that Michael Schumacher who split the time with Rosberg on third place will have to move down 10 positions. same goes for Ferraris Massa who is starting on last position. Same thing happened to Hondas Rubens Barichello and Toyotas Ralf Schumacher who are also forced down 10 positions in the start grid.
It will be interesting to see what effect the extreme heat will have on the outcome of the race tomorrow, with temperatures of 37C/98.6F during the qualification today. Keep in mind that the cockpit of a F1 car is pretty hot to begin with, spending over an hour in a F1 cockpit under this extreme heat is going to be hard on the drivers aswell as their motors.
I'll be back tomorrow with a (litterally) smoking report from the Malaysias Grand Prix 2006!
